Awake in the early hours this morning I tried to imagine myself unable to move. The only thing I allowed myself to do was blink. It's easy to do. That's how it is for Will at the moment.
Last Thursday I took the photo which has been published in the Daily Mail and sent it to Philip to show him that Will was back with us. But since then he has become increasingly immobile, and yesterday evening when he tried to move his fingers and toes, nothing worked.
It turns out this is a condition you can get when you have been in ITU a long time. The Catch 22 is that you can't get out of ITU if you have it. Of course I look it up the minute I get home. And feel much worse. We had been warned that it wouldn't be easy. And reminded that Will has been "unimaginably" ill. So no wonder his mind is telling his body to keep very, very still.
The good thing is that it is "reversible". The all-important things seem to be OK – his heart, kidneys and brain, and his new heart is happier each day. Throughout this whole period snatches of song come and go. This week's has been "Time is on my side" by the Rolling Stones. Or rather Ti-i-i-ime is on my side, yes it is." And it is on his side. It may take weeks for things to start moving, and months to get home, but with help he will get there.
